Anglia reaffirm their partnership

Rhyl FC Sponsors

We are pleased to announce that our main sponsors Anglia Building & Decorating Contractors have formally agreed to maintain the Anglia name for season 2007/08.
There has been a lot of speculation over the last few weeks in relation to the sale of Anglia to the Homeserve group, and the affect this will have with our 3 year sponsorship agreement, Mike Walsh, Director of Anglia has worked tirelessly to ensure the sale of his business went smoothly, but always at the forefront of his negotiations were his commitment to honouring the 3 year partnership with Rhyl Football Club.
Mike has stated – “We have enjoyed tremendous exposure from being associated with Rhyl Football Club, and I personally, have, and always will be supportive of my home town football club. During the discussions with Homeserve directors, I personally made the point that we will be continuing our commitment to Rhyl FC and that it was never negotiable. I was also adamant that the Anglia name remains on the kit for this season so as to honour the commitment I made to Mal Jackson –Rhyl FC Commercial Director. The final year of the sponsorship will be reviewed early in 2008.
Contrary to rumours, any dealings I have with “other” clubs is on a personal basis and has no bearing on Anglia’s 100% support to Rhyl FC.
Mal Jackson commented – “ Mike has always been nothing more than upfront with me, and has kept myself and Peter Parry informed on developments at Anglia. We enjoy an open and honest relationship, and that is how it will remain. We are delighted that Anglia remain our main sponsor and that the name remains on our kit for the 2007/08 season”.

FOOD STANDARDS AGENCY WALES ANNOUNCES ‘AFAL’ AWARD FOR RHYL FOOTBALL CLUB
HEALTHY LIVING SCHEME
(Awards for Food Action Locally)

The Rhyl Football Club Healthy Living Scheme has been recognised by Food Standards Agency Wales as part of its 2007 AFAL Award Scheme. The Award, launched in November 2003, is a scheme to recognise individual or team contributions to local nutrition initiatives that have made a positive impact on the diet or eating habits in the communities they serve. The Award of £1000 and a celebratory fruit bowl was presented to Malcolm Jackson of Rhyl Football Club Healthy Living Scheme by Robert Pickard, Director-General of the British Nutrition Foundation, during the Agency’s Nutrition Conference in Wrexham last week.

Rhyl Football Club Healthy Living Scheme aims to encourage children to eat healthier diets and live more active lives. Children are encouraged to eat five pieces of fruit a day and do at least five sessions of 30 minutes activity each week. This is done by inviting the children into the club for a tour of the ground and dressing rooms and then telling the children how the players prepare for matches and the diet and exercise routines.

Malcolm Jackson, Commercial Director at Rhyl Football Club Healthy Living Scheme, said, "Since implementing the Rhyl FC Healthy Living Scheme in March 2006, we have had nearly 600 children to tour the ground and learn more about healthy living which complements their learning in the classroom. Without the support of Rhyl Town Council and Sainsburys, plus our many other partners, the scheme would have never happened. The feedback we have received back from the pupils and teachers has been really rewarding, with many schools taking the time to personally design thank you cards. We are obviously delighted to win this award from a recognised body such as the Food Standards Agency, which makes us more determined to continue to develop our community partnerships and increase the number of schools visiting the ground to complement the activity of the Welsh Network of Healthy Schools Scheme".

Commenting on the awards submissions, Lindsey Kearton, Senior Policy Officer at the Welsh Consumer Council and a member of the judging panel said, "As always it's been a really difficult choice to select the winners this year as the range and quality of all the projects is so high.
Encouraging people to adopt healthier lifestyles is never easy - the commitment and enthusiasm behind the work being done in communities across Wales is highly commendable and invaluable in helping people to make more healthier food choices."

Drastic idea to boost Rhyl

Posted by Dan Owen on June 23, 2007 12:21 PM

A LARGE section of central Rhyl should be rebuilt to help regenerate the town, a report has claimed.
Research by the Welsh Assembly Government states that much of Rhyl town centre would be ripe for development.
And a report to go before Denbighshire cabinet members next week says the area should be developed only en masse.
Although councillors cannot yet give the green light to specific developments, they are expected to back the West Rhyl Regeneration Strategy outlining how the town should be redeveloped.
The document will be referred to when any new plan for central Rhyl comes up, and, says the project, should not be a "piecemeal" redevelopment but a large-scale rebuild.
Councillors are urged to back the report at next week’s meeting.
The report says: "The West Rhyl Regeneration Strategy (WRRS) is a key document setting out the council’s aspirations for resolving dereliction and improving property along West Parade.
"This area is a crucial shop window for the town and much criticism about its condition and the negative image it presents have been received.
"There is significant interest in bringing forward development in the area, principally through the use of private money.
"The regeneration of Rhyl through a high-quality redevelopment of its marine quarter will make the coastal area an exciting and enjoyable visitor destination."
Four blocks of properties have been earmarked for redevelopment – one of which, the West Parade, High Street, Queen Street and Sussex Street block, makes up a massive part of the upper town centre.
Campaigners have already vowed to try and protect the Queen’s Arcade building, as of historical importance.
Two other blocks take in 50 to 57 West Parade and 85 to 90 West Parade, with the West Parade block from Sydenham Avenue to Sandringham Avenue also highlighted for rebuilding.
The report will be discussed by Denbighshire’s cabinet in Corwen on Tuesday.

Jailed for sex with girl, 15

Posted by Dan Owen on June 23, 2007 12:20 PM

A RHYL fairground worker who started a relationship with a 15-year-old schoolgirl was yesterday jailed and banned from working with children.
Craig Begley, 41, indulged in bizarre sex acts with the girl after telling her he loved her.
Mold Crown Court yesterday heard Begley accepted the relationship was "illegal, immoral and wholly inappropriate".
Begley, of West Parade, Rhyl, was banned from working with children, and was ordered to register with the police as a sex offender for life.
Judge John Rogers QC said the defendant had known the girl since she was in her early teens.
He said: "I am quite satisfied that you pursued her with the intention of eventually having a sexual relationship with her.
"When she was 15, a sexual relationship began and it continued for about 10 months. Only a prison sentence is appropriate."
Simon Medland, prosecuting, said two charges of sexual touching, which the defendant admitted, represented dozens of occasions when intercourse occurred.
He said Begley knew her age and had seen her in school uniform.
She went to his flat and he said he loved her, and told her they were now "going out".
He said the girl had her own problems, but the defendant made her feel protected and loved. On one occasion, he made her pregnant, but she miscarried.
He also asked her to indulge in bizarre sex acts which she did not want to do and did not like the idea of.
He never physically hurt her, but because of the disparity in age, build and sexual experience, she felt he was "very much over-powering". However, the sex was always consensual.
Brian Treadwell, defending, said: "With the benefit of hindsight, he accepts that it was illegal, immoral and wholly inappropriate."
"The defendant, because of his age and experience, knows that he should have known better.
"It was something he should have resisted."
The defendant worked at the fairground and had been parted from his long term partner and child, with whom he had no contact.

Woman ill after mastiffs attack dog

Posted by Dan Owen on June 7, 2007 3:04 PM

A DOG owner needed hospital treatment for shock after her pet was savaged by a bull mastiff “the size of a donkey”.
Diane Owens’ shitsu dog, Beckie, was attacked at a car boot sale in Rhyl.
The bull mastiff clamped its jaws around 13-year-old Beckie and a stallholder had to prise its teeth apart with a screwdriver.
North Wales Police officers were called and took witness statements after the attack on Sunday.
The incident aggravated a medical condition for Mrs Owens, 66, a retired Llandudno hotelier.
She was taken with husband David, 65, for treatment at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor, where she was placed on a drip.
The couple were leaving the car boot sale, opposite Sainsbury’s, when two bull mastiffs spotted the shitsu and dashed towards her.
Mrs Owens said: “They pulled their two owners towards us. One bull mastiff dived onto Beckie and threw her into the air. It was the size of a donkey. No-one could open its mouth. It was horrendous.”
“The owners were from Prestatyn but had Liverpool accents. They said they had only got their dogs from a dog compound on the Thursday beforehand.”
A vet treated Beckie for cuts and gave her antibiotic jabs.
Mrs Owens said: “The dog bit her face and ear and her back is bruised.
“Her tail doesn’t go up at the moment but at least she’s alive. ”

We won’t treat drug addicts in hotel room

Posted by Dan Owen on June 7, 2007 3:02 PM

PLANS to treat drug and alcohol addicts at a seafront hotel have been scrapped.
The Dewi Sant Centre in Rhyl was forced to move from its former base at a Salvation Army centre.
But their plan to move into a back room of the seafront Sandringham Hotel was criticised by residents and business people.
The Dewi Sant Centre has now said it will look for another venue.
They are due to move to a permanent new base in Clwyd Street later this year.
The Dewi Sant Centre is funded by Denbighshire Community Safety Partnership and run by charity Sova.
It was set up in 2003 to support those in need in the poorest parts of Rhyl.
A meeting to discuss the centre’s move was held in Rhyl last week.
And since then, the charity has decided not to go ahead with its controversial move.
Chris Arnold, director of Sova Wales, said: “We have decided not to go ahead as we would not wish to do anything which goes against public opinion.”
Rhyl councillor Joan Butterfield, who chaired last week’s meeting, said: “Everyone present was 100% in favour of the work Sova do and are anxious to see the service continue.
“The problem was the location. A hotel in a central promenade location is a totally inappropriate place for this service.”
The group was due to meet daily for eight weeks between 10am and 4pm.
The Sandringham Hotel is still used as a bed and breakfast, largely for homeless families sent there by Denbighshire County Council, but it still has a public bar.

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD boy was taken to hospital with a gashed head after he was hit with a stone yesterday.
He was playing with friends on Rhyl beach when the stone was thrown, hitting him by accident.
The coastguard was called shortly before 4pm and he was taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan, by ambulance. A coastguard spokeswoman said: “It was quite a deep cut.”
